A different kind of arborist
Over the past 20 years, Chris Mello has dedicated his life to the landscape industry — studying trees, plant health, tree biology, and every aspect of the craft. That depth of commitment didn't happen overnight. It was built in the dirt — hands and knees in the soil, learning how trees actually work from the ground up, at prominent commercial and residential landscape and tree companies across the region.
Since 2011, Chris has focused heavily on arboriculture — the science and practice of cultivating and managing trees. That specialization, combined with two decades of field experience, is what separates a Mello Roots assessment from a standard tree service visit.
He doesn't run a crew of twenty. He shows up himself, does the assessment himself, and writes the report himself. That's not a limitation — it's the point.
ISA Certified Arborist #WE-9501A
The International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Certified Arborist credential is the industry's most recognized professional standard. It requires documented field experience, a rigorous written examination, and ongoing continuing education to maintain. Chris has held his certification since 2008.
How Chris thinks about trees
Trees are long-term investments
A mature oak or jacaranda took decades to grow. Decisions made today — pruning cuts, soil treatments, irrigation — will shape that tree for the next twenty years. Chris treats every recommendation with that time horizon in mind.
Honest assessments over upsells
Chris doesn't sell tree removal services, so he has no incentive to recommend them. When he says a tree is healthy, it's healthy. When he says it's in trouble, he'll tell you exactly why — and what it will take to turn it around.
Your crew needs a roadmap, not jargon
Most landscape crews are skilled at maintenance — not diagnosis. Chris writes his reports so that a gardener with no arboricultural training can follow the action plan without guessing. Clear language, clear priorities, clear outcomes.
